Hokkaido Weather in June: What to Expect & Best Places to Visit
June is one of Hokkaido’s best-kept secrets.
While much of Japan is entering the rainy season, Hokkaido enjoys some of its most pleasant weather of the year. Days are comfortably warm, flowers begin blooming across the countryside, and the island’s famous summer crowds haven’t fully arrived yet.
For many travelers, June strikes the perfect balance. You’ll find longer daylight hours, comfortable temperatures for sightseeing, and fewer visitors compared to the peak months of July and August. It’s also one of the best times to enjoy Hokkaido’s natural scenery before the lavender fields and summer festivals attract larger crowds later in the season.
June is especially appealing if you enjoy outdoor activities. Hiking trails reopen after winter, national parks become more accessible, and scenic drives through rural areas like Furano and Biei are spectacular as fields turn increasingly green.
The downside? If you’re dreaming of seeing Furano’s famous lavender fields at their absolute peak, June may be slightly too early. Most lavender varieties begin blooming toward the end of the month, with peak season usually arriving in July.
Still, if your goal is pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful landscapes, June is one of the most rewarding months to visit Japan’s northernmost island.
Hokkaido in June: Best Things to Do
Explore Furano Before Peak Lavender Season
A visit to Furano is one of the highlights of any trip to Hokkaido in June.
Although the famous lavender fields aren’t yet at their peak, many flower farms begin coming to life throughout the month. Early-blooming flowers add color to the landscape, and you’ll enjoy significantly smaller crowds compared to July.
The biggest advantage of visiting Furano in June is the relaxed atmosphere. Parking is easier, tour buses are fewer, and you’ll have a much better chance of photographing the scenery without large crowds.
I personally think late June offers a wonderful balance between scenery and comfort. You get a taste of the flower season without the peak-season congestion.
Visit Biei’s Rolling Countryside
Biei is beautiful year-round, but June may be one of its most underrated seasons.
The famous Patchwork Road and Panorama Road are covered in fresh greenery, while farms and fields stretch across the landscape in every direction. The scenery feels vibrant and alive after the long Hokkaido winter.
This is also an excellent time for cycling. Temperatures are usually mild, and you’ll avoid the intense summer heat found in other parts of Japan.

Locals spend more time outdoors, beer gardens begin appearing around the city, and parks become popular gathering places.
One of my favorite places to visit in June is Odori Park. The flower beds are beautifully maintained, and the comfortable temperatures make it ideal for a leisurely walk.

- Hokkaido University Campus
Unlike Tokyo or Osaka, where summer heat can become exhausting, Sapporo remains refreshingly comfortable throughout most of June.
Discover Otaru’s Historic Waterfront
Just 40 minutes from Sapporo, Otaru makes an excellent day trip in June.
The pleasant weather is perfect for strolling along the historic canal, exploring old warehouses, and enjoying fresh seafood at local markets.
Otaru is especially beautiful during the longer daylight hours of early summer. Sunset arrives late, giving you plenty of time to explore without rushing.

June is also one of the best months for enjoying outdoor dining near the canal.
Hike in Daisetsuzan National Park
As snow retreats from higher elevations, hiking season begins across much of Hokkaido.
Daisetsuzan National Park, often called the “Roof of Hokkaido,” offers some of Japan’s most spectacular mountain scenery.
While some higher trails may still have lingering snow, many lower routes become accessible throughout June.
Bring:
- Waterproof hiking shoes
- Layers for changing temperatures
- Rain jacket
- Bear bell
Even if you’re not an experienced hiker, riding the ropeway and enjoying the alpine scenery is worth the trip.

June weather is one of the biggest reasons to visit Hokkaido.
Average temperatures vary depending on location, but generally expect:
- Sapporo: 57–72°F (14–22°C)
- Furano: 52–73°F (11–23°C)
- Hakodate: 55–70°F (13–21°C)
Unlike most of Japan, Hokkaido is largely spared from the intense rainy season that affects cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
That doesn’t mean it never rains. You should still expect occasional showers, especially in mountainous areas, but long stretches of gloomy weather are uncommon.
Most visitors find June temperatures ideal for sightseeing, hiking, and road trips.
What to Wear in Hokkaido in June
Packing for Hokkaido in June is fairly straightforward.
For most travelers, I recommend:
- T-shirts
- Light sweater or hoodie
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Light rain jacket
- Sunglasses
- Hat
Evenings can still feel cool, especially in rural areas and mountain regions.
If you’re planning to visit Daisetsuzan or other higher-elevation destinations, bring additional layers. Temperatures can be significantly cooler than in Sapporo.
Is June a Good Time to Visit Hokkaido?
Absolutely.
June offers some of the best weather you’ll find anywhere in Japan. The island is green, fresh, and full of life after winter, while visitor numbers remain relatively manageable.
